I. After boot-up
II. login as root
III. startx
IV. Click on the "Modem Configuration" icon in Control-Panel
A. select "cuaX, COMX: under MS-DOS" (this creates a sym link
from /dev/cuaX to /dev/modem)
B. Click on "OK"
V. Click on the "Network Configuration" icon in the Control-Panel
A. Under "Search for hostnames...," enter "fnal.gov"
B. Under "Nameservers", enter 131.225.8.120
C. Click on the "Interfaces" button
1. Click "Add"
2. Click "ppp" -> Ok
3. Enter the phone number you are dialing (840-8134 at Fermi).
4. No login name or password if you are dialing into Fermi.
5. Click on "Customize"
6. Click on "Communication"
a. Enter the phone number (if not there)
b. Remove all expect/send entries
c. Click "Append"
i. for "expect" enter "modem>"
ii. for "send" enter "ppp default"
iii. click "OK"
7. Click on "Networking"
a. Enter for no connection, "2"
b. Enter for broken connection "2"
c. MRU "1500"
d. MTU "1500"
e. local "0.0.0.0
f. remote "0.0.0.0"
g. Click on "Done"
8. Click on "Save Changes" (this edits files in
/etc/sysconfig and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts)
D. Click on "Activate" to test. Listen for the modem dialing.
VI. After setting things up, use "usernet" to control the link.
Bring up usernet and click on the red button associated with ppp0
to establish the link, the button will turn green when the link is up.
Press it again to disconnect.
