Pre-Installation Checklist

You'll need to acquire or know these items before installing Fermi Linux on your system:

It is recommended that you install NT *before* you install Linux. Just make sure that when you install NT you leave a sufficient amount of disk space open as a non-formatted partition to install Linux.
Fermi Linux (FRHL) Install floppy v5.2.1 from the PREP counter at FCC3W or from Yolanda at WH8NW. This is a specially modified install floppy for Fermi Network Installations.
The type of video card is in the system including make, model and amount of memory.
The type of ethernet card you have including make and model.
- If you have an ISA PnP ethernet card you will need to disable the PnP capability.
- Verify that the correct port (AUI, BNC, or UTP).
- The MAC (hardware) address of the ethernet card. At Fermi you are required to know this number in order to obtain an IP address from the DataComm group.
  - Boot the machine to the "Configure TCP/IP" screen. Then press Ctrl-Alt-F4. Approximately 4 lines from the bottom of the screen should be line that starts with the string "<6>eth0:". Near the end of the line should be a string of 6 hexidecimal numbers separated by colons. This is the MAC address. Use this number to request an IP address through the MISNET online request form, http://miscomp.fnal.gov/misnet/.
Obtain an IP address from the DataComm Group. This generally takes a day to get into the system.
The network Netmask (supplied by DataComm with the IP address).
The network Default Gateway IP address (supplied by DataComm with the IP address).
Since the machine will be dual bootable with NT we recommend you use LILO as your boot manager. But this is a personal choice. You may also use System Commander, Partition Magic, loadlin, etc. but we in the Computing Division, do not support any of these boot loaders.
A blank DOS formatted 1.44MB floppy to create a rescue boot disk.

Use the Tab/Alt-Tab keys to navigate between elements. The <space> key selects/deselects items.

- If you are installing FRHL v5.2.1 on an IDE harddrive larger than 8.4GB it is highly recommended that you read this document or the The Large Disk HOWTO, http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Large-Disk.html first. You will need to pass special optiions on the LILO: command line.
Configure TCP/IP
- Enter the IP address, Netmask and Default gateway address and hit "OK."

Intstallation Class
- Select which workgroup this machine will belong to. If you are off-site and aren't part of a particular group choose either "FermiStandAlone" or "CUSTOM."
- For more information, please read about what workgroups currently exist and how they work.
SCSI Configuration [Yes or No]
- This window will appear if you do not have a PCI SCSI device. If you have an ISA SCSI device, select "Yes" and choose the device from the list. Otherwise, select "No."

Current Disk Partitions
- You will need to create your disk partitions. The following are suggested partitions and sizes. At a bare minimum you should create the /, /home and a swap partitions. The reason to create a separate /home partition is to ensure that if something bad should happen to your system (/) partition, your personal home area may not be affected. (Note: Requested" and "Actual" numbers will vary and all partitions should be non-growable).

To partition disks with Disk Druid:
- First, delete all existing partitions, except those that contain the "other" operating system.
- Use "Add" to create new partitions. Enter its mount point, size and type.
- Repeat until all partitions are created.
- Hit "Ok" and "Yes" on the Save Changes screen.
- If you have modified an extended partition (i.e., /dev/hda5 or greater) then a reboot of the machine may be necessary. Simply return to the top and perform the steps again. When it comes time to put in the partition information, simply add the mount points to the partitions that already exist.

The installation will proceed. This takes about 30 minutes via the network and a progress bar will indicate the amount of time left.

- If you have a 2 button mouse, select Emulate 3-Button.

- If the card cannot be determined, the screen Choose a Card will appear. Select your card and hit Ok.

- If this fails, you will have to select the following information by hand:
  - Video Memory [select and Ok]
  - Clockchip Configuration [None, Ok]
  - Select Video Modes [select and Ok]
  - I recommend choosing at least the highest resolution under the 16 bit color depth.
Configure Timezone [select and Ok]
- Do not select the "Hardware set to GMT" option.
Services [select and Ok]
- Note: 1. Check autofs if you plan on using the automounter.
- 2. Check ypbind if you plan on using NIS maps from another machine.
Root Password [enter and Ok]

- If you have an IDE drive over 8.4Gb and you entered hda=C',255,63 at the LILO: command line above, you should add this here, as well.
Post Install - Fermi products and special workgroup modifications are performed at this time. This will take several minutes to complete.
